Palestinian militants in Gaza launched rockets into Israel as the date of October 7 is commemorated.
Palestinian militants in Gaza launched a series of rockets into Israel on Monday as mourners commemorated the anniversary of the October 7 attack, while a nearby ceremony continued without interruption.
According to Lebanon’s Health Ministry, an Israeli airstrike in the southern region of Lebanon resulted in the deaths of at least 10 firefighters. Hezbollah, which began its rocket attacks on Israel on October 8, 2023, in solidarity with Hamas, continued to fire rockets despite suffering recent casualties.
Hamas also reported engaging Israeli forces in various locations across Gaza. The Israeli military stated that it conducted a series of artillery and airstrikes overnight and into Monday to prevent what it described as an imminent threat. The military claimed to have targeted Hamas launch sites and underground militant facilities.
The clashes on this significant anniversary highlighted the militants' determination amid a severe Israeli offensive that has reportedly resulted in approximately 42,000 Palestinian fatalities, as per local medical sources. The offensive has also led to extensive destruction in Gaza and displaced around 90% of its residents.
One year ago, militants affiliated with Hamas breached Israel's security barrier and launched an unexpected assault on adjacent military installations and agricultural areas. This attack resulted in the deaths of approximately 1,200 individuals, predominantly civilians, and the abduction of around 250 others. Currently, about 100 hostages remain in Gaza, with estimates suggesting that a third of them may have perished.
Israel is currently engaged in conflict with Hamas in Gaza and its ally Hezbollah in Lebanon. Additionally, the nation has pledged to retaliate against Iran following a ballistic missile attack on Israel that occurred last week.
